Can You Text a Fax Number?
No. If you text a message to a fax number, the machine on the other end will not receive it. Nothing arrives, nobody is notified, and you usually will not get an error telling you it failed.
That is the short answer. Here is why, and what to do instead, because you probably landed here holding a document you need to send.
Why texting a fax number does nothing
Text messages and faxes travel on completely different systems that happen to share the same kind of phone number.
- A text message is data handled by the mobile network. It is delivered to a device registered to receive SMS.
- A fax is an actual phone call. One machine dials the other, they negotiate with those screeching tones, and pages are transmitted as image data over the voice line.
A fax machine is sitting on a landline waiting for a call. It has no ability to receive SMS, and most fax lines are not registered for texting at all. Your message goes nowhere.
What you will see on your end: usually nothing. The message may look sent in your app, which is the part that catches people out. It sat in your outbox, never bounced, and the office you were trying to reach never got it. If you are on a deadline, assume a text to a fax number simply did not happen.
The reverse is also true: a fax machine cannot send you a text message.

Most people asking this question want one of these:
"I want to send a document from my phone without a fax machine." That is what an online fax service does. Keep reading, it is the next section.
"Can I just text the office instead?" Sometimes. Many medical offices, pharmacies, and small businesses now accept documents by secure portal, email, or their own text line. If the fax number is the only contact you were given, call and ask if they take anything else, plenty of places do now and just have not updated their forms.
"Someone texted me from a fax number." Possible if the business uses a virtual number that handles both, but treat unexpected messages carefully. Do not send personal documents to a number that contacted you out of the blue.
